Associate Teacher
The Schenck School is one of a few schools nationwide that is accredited by The Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators both as a teacher training site and an educational facility.
All teachers receive two years of Orton-Gillingham training at Schenck as entry-level, associate teachers. Each classroom has two teachers, and new associate teachers work in partnership with the lead teacher, teaching a portion of the subject matter independently in a self-contained classroom setting. On average, each classroom has ten students.
The students at The Schenck School are those with average to above average intelligence who have learning difficulties evidenced by a discrepancy between their school performance and their academic potential. These students have not been successful in traditional school programs, and their difficulties are not caused by mental retardation, emotional, or behavioral difficulties.
Teacher applicants must have educational experience but do not have to be in the field of learning disabilities. Teacher salaries are competitive with other independent schools, and there are numerous employee benefits. Interested applicants should contact Elizabeth King, Assistant to the Head of School, at eking@schenck.org.
