Schenck Helping Individuals in Need Excel, or SHINE, is a tutoring program that was launched in 2009. The mission of SHINE is to provide one-on-one tutoring at no charge to metro children ages 5 to 15 with documented reading difficulties and demonstrated financial need.

The Tutors

Every tutor in this program is a volunteer from The Schenck School. All reading instruction in SHINE is grounded in the Orton-Gillingham Approach, a research-based, multisensory, highly successful approach to phonics and reading instruction.

Sessions are usually one hour in length, twice per week. Tutoring is generally conducted at The Schenck School between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday.

The Application Process

  • Request Application Materials - Contact the program administrator, Kerri Saulnier. Call(404) 252-2591, or email

  • Be Screened - Applicants are screened by the program administrator and other members of The Schenck School faculty. The School screens all applicants to the SHINE Program. The screening process is not to diagnose dyslexia but to determine whether the program will be of genuine help to the applicant.

  • Be Approved - Applicants accepted into the program are assigned to a tutor. Please be aware that there are a limited number of tutors available and applicants may be placed on a waiting list.

  • Go - The specific dates and times of tutoring will be scheduled with the tutor. The duration of tutoring is based on individual need.
