Music

The music program at The Schenck School instills an appreciation for all aspects of music and music history.

Once a week all grade levels attend music. The students are taught note values, the music alphabet and musical terms. While learning about the instruments that make up an orchestra, students learn about many composers ranging from the time of Mozart to present day. The genres of opera and jazz are explored and several weeks are spent learning a variety of folk dances. As a part of learning how to perform, all students have the opportunity to perform in a mini-musical play or vocal performance.

Kindergarten, first and second grade students are taught to keep a steady beat and to play non-pitched rhythm instruments. Additionally, they participate in movement and listening games and singing. First and second grade students begin to learn how to play Orff instruments.

Third grade students learn to compose music and play many pieces of the Orff instruments. In addition, they learn to play hand bells and continue to learn new songs.

Fourth grade students learn to play recorders and read music in the treble clef. The students also continue to learn pieces for the Orff instruments.

Fifth grade students continue to play recorders, the Orff instruments and also make and learn to play dulcimers.

Sixth grade students do not attend weekly music class. Each spring this class rehearses and performs a junior musical.
