Roadrunners I

This comprehensive, nine month teacher training class includes the following:

  • General history and structure of the English language
  • Phonological awareness
  • Sound/symbol relationships for reading and spelling
  • Six syllable types and seven ways to divide words into syllables
  • Anglo-Saxon, Latin and Greek elements (prefixes, roots, and suffixes)
  • Spelling rules and generalizations
  • “Learned” words which don’t fit the rules
  • Plurals
  • Possessives
  • Accenting
  • Scope and sequence of skills
  • Lesson planning
  • Weekly quizzes along with a final exam
  • Development of teaching materials
  • “Jewel” box of decks used for student drills

This course is accredited by The Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators at the Associate level. Along with this course work, a 100 hour, one-on-one observed practicum is required for certification by the Academy.

Teacher Training

Class Times

Classes meet weekly over the course of the school year, beginning in August and continuing through the middle of May. Usually, both an early morning (7:30 a.m.- 9:30 a.m.) and an afternoon (3:45 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.) class are offered.
