Outreach

At The Schenck School, our reach extends far beyond the walls of our classrooms. Through programs like S.H.I.N.E. (Schenck Helping Individuals in Need Excel) and the Adult Dyslexia Program, we are dedicated to making a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals facing reading challenges across our community. These initiatives reflect our commitment to sharing the transformative power of the Orton-Gillingham Approach with children and adults alike, ensuring that everyone has access to the tools they need to succeed.

S.H.I.N.E.

S.H.I.N.E. (Schenck Helping Individuals in Need Excel) offers one-on-one tutoring at no cost to metro-area children ages five to 15 who have documented reading challenges and meet specific financial criteria. The program’s goal is to help students become confident, proficient readers through intensive, effective tutoring.

Tutoring is provided by dedicated Schenck School volunteers, and instruction is anchored in the Orton-Gillingham Approach, a research-backed, multisensory method proven to improve phonics and reading skills.

Sessions are typically one hour, twice a week, and are held at The Schenck School between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday.

Steps to Take

To access tutoring through S.H.I.N.E., eligible families can follow a simple process to get started. Below are the steps to ensure your child receives the support they need to become a confident reader.

Adult Dyslexia Program

The Adult Dyslexia Program was launched in 1999 by our school founder, David Schenck, who aspired to share his knowledge of the Orton-Gillingham Approach and teach dyslexic adults to read. Mr. Schenck secured initial funding from the Goizueta Foundation, whose primary purpose is to support programs benefiting the communities on a state and national level. The instruction is phonics-based and multi-sensory.

The Orton–Gillingham Approach to phonics instruction matches letters and combinations of letters to distinct sounds. Multi-sensory teaching combines seeing, saying, hearing, and writing.
