July 14, 2021 Dear Schenck School Community,
When I became Head of School at The Schenck School in 2016, I felt like I had won the 'career lottery.' I long admired The Schenck School from afar and the opportunity to serve as its leader was the pinnacle of my professional ambitions. It was no surprise then that the reality of The Schenck School exceeded my high expectations. I found a welcoming, enthusiastic and professional community dedicated to supporting and celebrating dyslexic learners. What I did not anticipate, though, was what The Schenck School would mean to my family. I had no way of knowing that both of my children would be restored by its expertise, kindness, and belief in honoring who they are and how they learn. When Rigby came to The Schenck School as a 3rd grader in 2019, after only the first few weeks an unrecognized burden was lifted. He was happy in a way I never understood he was sad. When Dalloway came last year after an abrupt, tough and tearful road of online learning, she was cradled by the love and compassion of this community. Through face masks, temperature checks and 6ft of distance, my little girl believed in herself once again.
It is our love and eternal gratitude for this community that made the decision to leave to become Head of School at Landmark School on Boston's North Shore incredibly difficult. We are not leaving for greener pastures but an entirely different opportunity that makes the most sense for our family and the next stage of our lives.
During my time at The Schenck School it has been one of my life's greatest honors to shepherd the legacy of David Schenck. This community's commitment to serving our 250 students while also doing all we can to ensure all families, teachers and students benefit from its expertise, regardless of income or location, has been one of my greatest privileges. When I reflect back on my time at The Schenck School thus far, there is no singular accomplishment I am most proud of. I am simply honored to be a part of it.
I want to assure everyone that The Schenck School is uniquely positioned to attract a phenomenal leader as its next Head of School. Thanks to the support and dedication of our community, the school is an enviable position that will attract the nation's top talents. The Board of Trustees have already begun the process of a national search, and I feel such relief knowing our community is in such capable hands.
Over the next 11 months, my top priority remains ensuring that our community is healthy, safe and immersed in the expertise, love and support of The Schenck School. I look forward to continuing to partner with you all on this shared goal.
Sincerely,
Josh J. Clark Head of School
